The Jefferson County Correctional Facility, opening in 1992, is a 163 bed direct supervision facility that is fully dedicated to the citizens of Jefferson County in its' efforts to provide and maintain a safe and secure facility, in which to lawfully detain and house inmates. The facility is also charged with the transport of inmates to courts, prisons and other designated sites.

The Jefferson County Correctional Facility employs one lieutenant, five sergeants, fifty-two full time officers and five part-time officers.

All inmates entrusted to the facility are treated fairly and justly without regard to their race, gender, religion or age. Rehabilitation, education and humane treatment are the hallmarks of this facility.

Direct supervision facilities are based on a system of reward and discipline. Better control of inmates in this type of facility compared to traditional jails results in significantly decreased violence, noise, vandalism and harassment of staff by inmates. Also, in a direct supervision jail system, inmates have a better chance of leading productive lives after they finish their sentence.

An officer works inside each of six housing units called "pods" which can house up to 32 inmates. These officers are responsible for all aspects of an inmate's life while incarcerated. Working in a direct supervision jail is quite different than working in a traditional "linear" jail, with rows of barred cells. Specialized training is required for all officers working in this environment.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Corrections Training Department

To meet the necessity for highly trained corrections professionals, the Jefferson County Correctional Facility has taken strides to become one of the top training county facilities in New York State, as recognized by the New York State Commission of Corrections and the Office of Public Safety.

This facility is completely self-sufficient for all career related training, employing more than 16 state certified instructors that teach topics from Unarmed Defensive Tactics to Firearms; from Suicide Prevention and Crisis Intervention to CPR & First-Aid and much, much more.

In recent years, the training department has taken on the tasks of redesigning the In-Service Training for staff (which includes all state mandated training as well as new forms of training being introduced), Field Training Program for recruit officers, an Internship Program, and the participation in the new NYSCOC Basic Correctional Course, V.I.N.E. (Victim Information and Notification Everyday), and the Wake-Up Program. The amount of hours dedicated to training has increased exponentially. This increase in training has resulted in more cost effective operations through heightened staff awareness, reduced injuries to staff and inmates as well as reduction in the costs to tax payers through reduced litigation from lawsuits derived from "failure to train properly" claims.

The Jefferson County Correctional Facility also participates with local scholastic institutions (S.U.N.Y. and BOCES), conducting an Internship Program in which students with Criminal Justice careers in mind have an opportunity to "ground" themselves with real world learning and experience in an actual  jail setting.
